TNR, or Trap-Neuter-Return, is a humane method of managing the stray and feral cat population. The process involves trapping a cat using a humane trap, spaying or neutering it at a vet, and then returning it to its original location. This prevents further reproduction while allowing the cat to live out its natural life.
Spaying and neutering are crucial in reducing overpopulation, as a single cat can have over 180 kittens in her lifetime, and a dog can have 70-90 puppies. These numbers multiply rapidly, contributing to the millions of homeless animals struggling to survive. By fixing even one animal, you are preventing thousands more from being born into hardship.
TNR also benefits individual cats by reducing certain health risks and preventing behaviors like spraying, yowling, and fighting. Many local TNR programs offer free or low-cost surgeries, and some rescues even cover the cost entirely. If the cat is friendly or a young kitten (under 12 weeks), they may be socialized and adopted instead of being returned.
If you see a cat with a tipped ear (missing the top part of one ear), that means it has already been through a TNR program and should be left unless it appears sick or friendly enough for adoption.
If you're around the Bloomington-Normal area, One Wish can lend humane traps, assist with TNR efforts, and cover spay/neuter costs for outdoor cats. Contact us to help reduce the stray cat population and give these animals a better future.
TNR surgeries can cost from $10-$100 per cat, but some clinics may offer them for free. Check with local vets, rescues, and TNR programs to find affordable options in your area.
By spaying and neutering your pets, you help prevent unwanted litters and reduce the number of homeless animals in need.
